The MiSunderstood Foundation is a 501c3, non-profit organization, which aims to: encourage exercise & movement amongst those living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), raise funds for & promote minority research in MS, and raise awareness of this autoimmune disease.
Our Priorities Include...
General Activity
Regular physical activity may have neuroprotective effects in MS patients. Exercise has been shown to have beneficial effects on immune cells and neurotrophic factors, brain structure and function, walking and cognitive performance, fatigue, depression, pain, and quality of life among persons with MS.
Strength Training
Strength training has been associated with a 27% lower relapse rate; compared to control conditions in individuals living with MS.
Minorities in Research
Health disparities, particularly in communities of color, have long been a critical issue in medical research. This gap is no different when it comes to Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Historically, racial and ethnic minorities have been underrepresented in research trials, resulting in limited data on how MS manifests and progresses in black and brown populations. This misrepresentation contributes to a lack of tailored treatments and care plans that reflect the unique experiences of these communities.
